Atlanta is an extraordinary place for historians. It is a city that is rich in both history and culture. If you are a Civil War buff you will find Atlanta particularly wonderful. One of the “must see” places in Atlanta to take in Civil War history is the Oakland Cemetery. Located at 248 Oakland Avenue in Atlanta, the cemetery is home to the final resting place of many civil war soldiers and several famous citizens of Atlanta. It is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places. So what will you find at the cemetery?

Dating is, of course, based on attraction. At least attraction is where it begins. If attraction is where it ends, dating and relationships can lead to disaster.

For singles, the problem comes up when we decide that a strong attraction to someone means it is a good fit, or even worse, “meant to be.”

When we focus too much on attraction alone, it is incredibly easy to miss the red flags that are telling us this might not be a good idea.

Dating successfully requires four skills. The four essential skills for singles are scouting, sorting, screening and testing.

Scouting - Scouting is simply looking out into the world and looking for people that you are attracted to. Other people such as friends and family can do scouting for you as well. Some people you notice will not even be considered, others may require further investigation, which leads to…….

Sorting - Sorting is discarding those you automatically know will not be a candidate, and then pursuing further those that might be a possible match for you.

Dating is hard work for some singles. Doing it “The American Way” makes it even harder work for some. In our culture we are so prone to trying to go it alone because we falsely believe that asking for help is a sign of weakness.

The factors to be considered are likely to be your children’s school, the amount of travel to reach your workplace, and a friendly and comfortable neighborhood. You will find many realtors and apartment search firms ready to help you in that process.

Art Lovers? For a dose of culture head to the Woodruff Arts Center, which houses the High Museum of Art. The High Museum boasts a collection of works by European and American artists, including a fine collection of African American art. There is also a respectable collection of works by Southern artists. In addition to the High Museum, the Woodruff Arts Center holds the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, 14th Street Playhouse, Alliance Theater and the Atlanta College of Art.

How long do you need to know a person before you can know for sure that this person is “the one?”

In my experience working with singles and couples, it’s a good idea to know a person for at least four seasons - winter, spring, summer, fall - before you decide this is the one.

This give you enough time to determine if this person is someone who is commit-able, able to enter fully into a long term loving relationship.

If you have a history of failed and/or difficult relationships, you may be feeling “gun shy” - more than a little scared to get into another relationship and repeat history.
